  • Bottom Gusset: A triangle shaped fold on the bottom of the bag.  The bottom gusset adds the depth to the bag and a flatter surface to its bottom.
  • Bottom Seal: A method of bag manufacture in which the main and visible seal of the bag is located at the bottom.  A small tail of film generally remains below the bottom seal.
  • Cold Weld: A method of securing a bundle of bags together by pressure and not heat.  The bags will separate from each other with minimal force during dispensing.
  • Die Cut: Any cut pattern on a bag that is created from a cutting die in a press.
  • Embossing: Slightly deformed surface or surface texture pressed into film.
  • Flat Bot’um Seal: Angular heat seals in the gusset that allow the bottom of the bag to open flat.
  • Flip: The portion of the front ply of the bag that is folded down creating a pocket. This front ply (pocket) is flipped over to close the bag.
  • HDPE: High Density Polyethylene.
  • Header: Material at the top of one bundle of bags, separated by a perforation.  This material is generally heat sealed and cut with small holes allowing the bundle to hang as a group on a flat dispenser.
  • Heat Seal: A method of permanently joining a bundle of bags together by heat.
  • Kidney Handle: Handle hole relatively shaped like a kidney bean.  Standard width of this handle hole is 2 7/8”.
  • LDPE: Low Density Polyethylene.
  • LLDPE: Linear Low Density Polyethylene.
  • Lip: Film height that is between the top of the front ply and the perforation of the back ply.
  • Mil: Thickness unit of film.  1 mil = 0.0010” = 25.4 microns.
  • Perforation: Dashed cut in film that allows for easy tearing and separation.
  • Saddle: Material joining and at the top of two bundles of bags, separated by a perforation.   This material is generally heat sealed and cut with small holes allowing the bundle to hang like a “saddle” from a double sided dispenser.
  • Side Gusset: A triangle shaped fold on either side of a bag.  The gusset is considered the depth of the bag.
  • Side Seal: A method of bag manufacture in which the main, and generally only, seals are on the side of the bag.
  • Sinewave: A bag style in which the top handle shape is patterned after a sinewave, or simply waved.
